Lesson Nine

Text Effects

No tools used in this tutorial.....just effects to show the different ways to display text.

Open a new image large enough to work with....you can always crop or resize it later.

My first canvas is 270 x 100

Firstly I will show you how to make the two different texts above then you can make your own banner using the same effects

The colours I have chosen are bright, but this is so the effects stand out better for the tutorial

1. Flood fill the canvas with colour # 4040FF

2. Make your foreground colour Null & Background colour # FF4040

3. Add a new layer, Grab the text tool and type your text

I used Times New Roman size 48 > OK

4. While it is still selected on your canvas > Go To > Effects > 3D Effects > Drop Shadow

Settings

Vertical & Horizontal = 4

Opacity = 70

Blur = 12

Shadow colour Black >

Fill with unchecked .....OK

(you may have noticed in other lessons that this is my favourite drop shadow settings) :o)

Selections > Select None.

5. Then I went back to my fill layer and added the buttonize feature

Effects > 3D Effects > Buttonize....with settings

Height, Width & Opacity all set to 30

Transparent Edge Checked

6. Layers Merge and save as JPG

The drop shadow gives the effect of the text standing out from the background

For the cutout effect.....follow steps 1 - 3 above

4. While Still selected go to Effects > 3D Effects > Cutout

Settings

Vertical & Horizontal = 4

Opacity = 100

Blur = 6

Shadow colour Black......OK

Now to make it stand out more we add a drop shadow

Effects > 3D Effects > Drop Shadow.....but this time the settings are different

Vertical & Horizontal = 2

Opacity = 100

Blur = 2

Colour set to WHITE.....OK

Selections > Select None.

Back to the bottom layer to buttonize

Merge & Save

As you can see the cutout looks as though the text has been carved out of the background

Now you can make your own Banners using both of the above effects.

Have Fun!!!
