Adding a soft border to an image

Tools we will be using in this tutorial

Selection Tool

Flood Fill Tool

1. Save this zip file    to your computer and open all images in PSP

2. Right click on the image below and save picture as then open in PSP

This picture is not a copyright, it is my daughter Rebecca aged 12. :o)

 

3. We will be starting with the main image, so highlight Rebecca.

On your layer palette if the layer is classed as "Background"  Right Click on it and "Promote To Layer" 

Go to layers > new Raster Layer.> OK >Layers > Arrange > Send to Bottom.....check your layer palette and make sure the new layer(2) is highlighted.and at the bottom.

4. Grab the flood fill tool and set your foreground colour to #F4E7B4 > Background Colour to NULL

Left click on your image to fill the background, you wont be able to see it but it is there.....now go to your layer palette and highlight (Click on layer 1)

5. Grab your selection tool ...go to the tool Options Palette and set as follows

Elipse

Feather 10

antialias checked

Place the cursor on the image and move it around till you are on Pixels (125, 170)....if you look in the bottomleft hand corner of your psp screen you will see these settings.

 

Once you have these settings click and drag the cursor till you reach (25, 25) pixels ... click again.

 

You will now have an elipse of marching ants round your image like this

 

Selections Invert (this will now make your selection look smaller) but you will also have the marching ants all the way round your full image.

Hit delete on your keyboard.... Selections > Select None......you will now be able to see your background colour.

 

6. Layers > Merge > Merge Visible.

7. Go to your gilt corners image (that you saved from the zip file) and highlight...go to Edit > Copy.....then Click on your Rebecca Image and go to Edit > Paste >as new layer.

Effects > Sharpen > Sharpen.

Effects > 3D Effects > Drop shadow > Settings Horizontal & Vertical 4 Opacity 70 Blur 10 Colour #753A17....OK

8. Layers > New Raster Layer.....OK

9. Grab yout text tool.....Set your foreground styles to NULL and your background Style to Pattern.

 

10. Click on the pattern showing to load your pattern folder......then use the dropdown menu to find the gold fill that you have open from the zipfile....OK

 

11. Click on your Image of Rebecca and choose a fancy font to write your name in.....I am using font "Edwardian Script ITC Size 36....Once you are happy with your font....click OK and position it on your image.....Selections > Select None.

12. Layers > Merge > Merge All ( Flatten) and save as jpg......Voila!!!
